Global: BBC – ‘Electric cars will take over sooner than you think’

The BBC have released an article discussing how we may have already passed the tipping point where sales of electric vehicles will overwhelm petrol and diesel cars. The article continues to describe how governments are setting targets to ban the sale of 'ICE' vehicles, whilst manufacturers plan to sell only electric cars within the next decade. Chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt continues by highlighting how he believes the EV market is about where the interest was around the late 1990s - and did not follow a linear path to world domination, it was explosive and disruptive - and followed an S-curve. You can read more by reading the full article here.

Innovation within the energy sector needs to ‘up its game’

The Chief Operating Officer of Bramble Energy has called for the energy sector to up its game and implement technological change in an article published by IT Pro Portal. For decades the energy sector has functioned by the use of fossil fuels but the damage it causes is taking a huge toll on our planet. Renewable sources of energy grew faster in 2020 than they have since 1999, however this has taken too long to come into play. To read more, click here.

Is the future of our energy supply chain the ‘energy internet’?

Brian Ryan, Vice President of Innovation at National Grid Partners has written an article at Tech Crunch that speculates how the future is about open innovation and integration of elements across the entire energy supply chain - rather than a single big bang change. His article suggests that this 'energy internet' needs to be able to treat generation modalities like server platforms and make transmission grids as accessible as our data networks, able to deliver energy to any consumption endpoint just as flexibly. These reflections support an innovative future - and we continue to engage the industry and our customers to help unlock future energy benefits that make a shared contribution in that future. You can read Brian's full article here.

Electric Cars Will Be Cheaper Than ICE Cars

Electric cars will eventually become cheaper to produce than internal combustion engine cars according to a report from BloombergNEF. This is partly due to the declining cost of batteries. It is likely, however, that smaller cars will take longer to lower production cost because they need economies of scale. This is also true for less developed markets like India. UK: Things are heating up

The government has said that gas and oil boilers will be banned in 2025, but what will replace them? The main contenders are hydrogen heat pumps and other forms of low carbon heating, or potentially the most efficient option being a heat pump. Heat pumps can offer both carbon and financial savings compared to traditional gas boilers. Our CMO strongly vouches for the efficiency after recently having one installed and will be writing further about his experiences over on our Energy Insights page in the coming weeks.
