US: The Race to Make Self-Driving Cars a Reality

Michigan Technological University and Ohio State University were among four teams recently chosen to receive federal funding for the second phase of  NEXTCAR (Next-Generation Energy Technologies for Connected and Automated On-Road Vehicles). The main focuses of this technology are autonomy, fuel efficiency, and connectivity. The NEXTCAR program started nearly five years ago, aims to achieve 20% fuel economy gains. With the current surrounding infrastructure, connected technologies are paving the way for artificially intelligent communicating vehicles and the self-driving cars could be closer than we think.
