The Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Alok Sharma MP has written a letter of tribute for the vital contribution made by the energy sector and its workers at this time. We pass this on and add our tribute to those in the sector, also those at our customers, affiliates and of course our own employees. With real time critical transactions flowing at scale through our software for energy Suppliers that support customer use of energy, their vital contribution matters more than ever. Thank you everyone as we all carry on supporting customers collaboratively. Read the letter at the government website link here
We recently opened a new head-quarters office that we designed, supported by the skills of Think!Creative. The meeting rooms use board games and interesting imagery that we will show here over time. Utilligroup cannot wait until we can invite you there, share a drink and empower your growth in person together. Until then it is 'business as unusual' online where we continue to empower competitive leaders & help make energy smarter and sustainable for everyone. Contact us & we will be back in touch promptly to unleash your innovative customer benefit.
The UK has beaten its previous record for the longest period of coal free electricity generation on Tuesday 28th April 2020, beating the 18 days set in 2018. Low energy demand & changing home usage patterns remove the need for coal plants to operate during the final stage of their contribution to the energy mix. National Grid ESO sent a tweet confirming the change. Read more here and at this article then about the progressive closure of UK coal plants at New Civil Engineer. The image shows Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station running towards it own closure near junction 24 of M1 in Nottinghamshire (image source PA). UK energy is becoming smarter and more sustainable for everyone. Contact us to discuss your participation & growth as energy supply, mobility & sustainability converge towards net-zero.
During work from home, we appreciate our surroundings as nature flourishes and birds fly with far less noise. Today is Earth Day #50, providing pause for thought and a spur to action. Learn more at Earth Day & twitter. Let's also buy plants from closed garden centres & support the NHS at Telegraph, SmartPlantapp & Plantsavers. We now only give packs of wildflower seeds at events as an example of our own shift to be more sustainable. Local rewilding is rewarding using BeeBomb to support bees & insects (nice gifts too). Read about our earlier action in Buzz posts. We are especially proud to help empower many green energy Suppliers. Together, let's make energy smarter (& more sustainable) for everyone.

Working from home is now the new unnormal for everyone, with our teams quick to adjust & innovate. Utiligroup started its transition early, over a month ago to be ready to support our customers during their own changeover. Our wonderful team is constantly finding ways to be creative, supportour customers and each other. Online meetings have extended into virtual pubs, gym sessions, dress up birthday parties, team cycling and quizes. As people add new backgrounds to their calls, they appear to have dialled in such as world leaders, celebrities and even Mexican wrestlers. It's a different time in society but our business carries on supporting energy leaders, making energy smarter and underpinning customer support by Suppliers. We look forward to a better shared future, but for now Utiligroup is live, engaging deeply with the energy sector and finding new ways to innovate. Business as unusual, we're on it! In this unprecedented year, the pattern of energy use is changing due to work from home and low industrial demand. Demand is up at homes, with a smoothed morning peak while industrial demand is much reduced leading to complications in managing the national grid. During Summer 2020 it is possible demand will fall below the baseload generation with incentives needed to reduce production or increase demand flexibly. We may see more negative prices for our smarter energy demand at times. National Grid and Distribution System Operators quietly carry on delivering the energy and managing the networks to meet the different needs of energy for us all in 2020. We raise our mugs to them! A common question from our Utiligroup Buzz readers is to ask about the pictures we include here to break up the posts. We're pleased to clarify they are taken from the meeting rooms at our recently opened head quarters office in Chorley. Having used energy & technology naming in other offices for the rooms, we decided on a playful approach for the new office. Each room is named after a classic board or card game with imagery and items included there to experience. See which games you spot in here at Buzz! We will include more game related pictures from the offices here and look forward to hosting you once again at our offices in the near future.
The growth of electric vehicles presents a new and exciting opportunity for motorists - how, when and where to charge your vehicle. Our charging infrastructure continues to grow across the UK but how is convenience affected? The solution will include smart charging from the home - but how economical, efficient and flexible is this for the average road user, or for fleet? We're linking to some thought provoking articles from fleetpoint.org that discuss the future of Smart EV charging. You can read them at Fleetpoint here: charging markets, EVs go mainstream & providers join forces for smart charging.
The Energyst recently published an article around how fake news is leading to fears that our power system won't cope with the impact of coronavirus. National Grid ESO director Fintan Sly, commenting in the article, explains that 'with more people across the UK working from home it should actually reduce demand on the power system'. You can read the article by clicking here. If you'd like to read more, UKPN have also posted an article featuring Basil Scarsella, CEO of UK Power Networks, who explains how 'Power will stay on in the UK'. The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has provided a sector wider clarification of UK energy system resilience to read here.
