Heat pumps are growing in popularity around the UK, partly due to the financial support available but also due to the significant savings that can be made on fuel bills. Our CMO, Mark Coyle recently invested in a heat pump for his home, which provides hot water and heating purely from the air and doesn't require any gas. At ESG we strive to experience the benefits of future energy in our own lives in order to help us understand the requirements as adoption for these new technologies grows. Mark will be sharing his experiences of his heat pump installation on our website soon.
When it comes to sustainable, carbon-zero fuel, hydrogen is often quoted as the having the most potential in the future of energy generation - but how much do you know about hydrogen? And how far are countries around the world in developing and producing strategies, refineries and hydrogen generation? The IET - the Institution of Energineering & Technology - recently published an in-depth article that describes how countries around the world are looking to harness the power of hydrogen. The new report from Berkley Labs identifies that the USA is half way to a carbon-free electric grid. It’s an interesting report and exciting time for those delivering the transition and helping customers use carbon-free energy. Forward thinking policy in combination with technology that does not involve fuel combustion as a commercial and residential heat source is required in order for states to meet their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission limits. The streamlining of heat pump deployment will largely be done by the utilities in order to effectively drive the price of heat pumps below that of traditional heat source systems. It is interesting to see this area of clean energy transformation growing in focus. Click here to read more.
Michigan Technological University and Ohio State University were among four teams recently chosen to receive federal funding for the second phase of NEXTCAR (Next-Generation Energy Technologies for Connected and Automated On-Road Vehicles). The main focuses of this technology are autonomy, fuel efficiency, and connectivity. The NEXTCAR program started nearly five years ago, aims to achieve 20% fuel economy gains. With the current surrounding infrastructure, connected technologies are paving the way for artificially intelligent communicating vehicles and the self-driving cars could be closer than we think. The UK's electricity grid was the greenest it has ever been on Eater Bank Holiday Monday, with 80% of energy coming from zero-carbon energy sources. National Grid ESO explained that the sunny and windy weather, coupled with the low demand for power on the day led to a surge in renewable sources of energy. On Monday, wind power made up 39% of the electricity mix, solar power 21& and nuclear 16% - meaning zero carbon sources made up 80% of the nation's power.
The US Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) published research on the ‘state of the consumer’. Consumer engagement and education is still important but also an industry responsibility. Smart energy consumers are starting to understand the connection between smart energy technologies and the slowing of climate change. The investment in renewables by governments along with more education on how technology can affect consumer energy usage must continue. Read more
Hosted by the UK, this online hybrid event will be the first major milestone to limit the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees C in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. This will take the cooperation of The US, European Nations, and other developed countries in the global climate community. This event, with much attention on it, will shine light into the latest debates and deals in international diplomatic team work to combat climate change. Read more
It’s been a decade since smart meters emerged in North America’s residential energy sector, but the US Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC) recent publication, called the ‘state of the consumer’ indicates that the smart energy customer is finally emerging. The research also recognised how important consumer engagement and education are to unlock the energy savings potential that smart meters bring. Smart energy ‘green consumers’ are also starting to understand the connection between smart energy technology and the slowing of climate change. You can learn more about the SECC’s report by reading SMART ENERGY INTERNATIONAL’s article here.
CleanTechnica recently published an article that highlights the decisive transition that the US power sector faces across the coming decade. 2019 capped a decade capitalised by the decline of coal, the rise of natural gas and the growth of renewables - but the coming years will see an acceleration to a carbon-free electric future. The article goes into further detail from the RMI's report, 'Cutting Carbon while keeping the lights on', which explains that 50% of the US coal fleet could be retired by 2025 without a direct capacity replacement - intensifying the requirements in solar and wind energy.
